Who We Are

Friends of Gables High is a non-profit comprised on alumni, parents of students, and community members and leaders, with a current board of 19 members.  We have a school representative to keep us fully connected to ongoing issues and needs at the school.  We share a common bond: We care about the Cavaliers and the future of Coral Gables Senior High.

We believe in the basic premise of the traditional public school model and are committed to ensuring that the City of Coral Gables has a high quality free public education high school option for parents where their children can learn in a respectful, safe, and aesthetically pleasing educational environment.

Quality public schools are not only essential for a Democracy to thrive, they are directly tied to the vitality of a city. Most importantly at this point in time, we believe that Coral Gables Senior High School, the namesake school of Coral Gables, Florida, should live up to the city’s moniker, ‘The City Beautiful.’

Our Goals

Advocate for Gables High in the community and governmental agencies.

The $25 million allocated to Gables High in the GOB will make radical improvements to the school campus and we are excited for the changes ahead! However, there is still much to be done to take this school to the next level. We see the need for improved fencing along Le Jeune Road, improved sports fields, and enhanced lanscaping in the new interior courtyard.

We also see a great need to replace the dilapidated band room and envision a new performing arts center with a wall to open out to the courtyard for pep rallies, concerts and plays. We are dreaming big dreams, and invite you to dream along with us!

First Gathering of the Friends of Gables High

Collaborate with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) on current campus renovation plans, and push to expand the plan.

Please refer to the Construction Update page for details. Friends of Gables High is actively collaborating with MDCPS to make sure that plans for the $26 million General Obligation Bond (GOB) allocated for renovations of Gables High stay on schedule and that the right decisions are made to restore and beautify the campus.

Restore Gables High to its historic status as a top rated high school in the country.

At one time, Gables High was listed in the top ten public high schools in the country. That was a long time ago and there are many more public, private, and charter high schools in existence today. However, the academics are still very strong at Gables High (some would argue much stronger) and Friends of Gables High will endeavor to have the school recognized nationally once again for its academic programs.

Committee Collaborates with the Designers

Support administration priorities.

Friends of Gables High will advocate on behalf of the school for additional funding as deemed appropriate and necessary, such as in the case of a new band building. We will also be vocal on educational issues, as well as tout the school’s great qualities in an effort to change any negative narrative about the school.

Support student groups including clubs, music and athletics.

Friends of Gables High will have regular get-togethers and events to connect alumni and the community to the school. We will maintain a website with up to date information regarding the school and alumni activity. We will send out a newsletter 3-4 times a year to keep Friends of Gables High members in the loop as to what we are doing, what we have achieved, and what our goals are as time goes on.
